Graduation Exhibition, Department of Ceramic and Glass Design, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, 2013
Advised by Dr. Eran Erlich
In 2013, I graduated from the Department of Ceramic and Glass Design at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, where I majored in sculpture and minored in ceramics. My graduation exhibition project, And They Shall Stand Before Me, is an installation comprising a two-channel video work and three figurative sculptures displayed on plinths covered in marble-patterned wallpaper. Behind them hang panels bearing a repeating tile pattern, produced using hand-pulled screen printing.
A visual resemblance can be identified between the images appearing in the family album and works belonging to the canon of figurative sculpture in general, and to the Orthodox Christian canon in particular. The visual similarities between these representations shed light on the status of the family structure as a canonical order.
Whether the resemblance between bodily poses stems from universal human factors, such as human physiology and psychology, or from an unconscious internalization of familial or religious-artistic conventions, the remarkable recurrence of canonical poses in our lives cannot ultimately be ignored.
