Material carries social meanings embedded in culture. Objects are associated with the materials from which they are made, and the meaning we assign to a material changes according to the objects we create from it. This work explores the relationships between meaning, image and material through the use of different materials to create female figures belonging to worlds far removed from one another — from prehistoric ritual figurines, through decorative porcelain figurines, to Barbie dolls.

The Biennale

The Biennale of Israeli Ceramics is the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of its kind in Israel, held every two years at the Eretz Israel Museum. It serves as a central platform for ceramic art and craft in Israel, bringing together artists, curators, visitors and others engaged with material culture. The 8th Biennale brought the expressive potential of material to the forefront of art and culture. It explored the wide-ranging possibilities of ceramic expression throughout the material’s life cycle — from wet to fired — and across different approaches to making, from ancient traditions to contemporary innovations, highlighting the contribution of ceramics to contemporary art.
